The Automaton is based on a story told to Paolo Ventura as a child. It centres on an elderly, Jewish watchmaker living in the Venice ghetto in 1943, one of the darkest periods of the Nazi occupation and the rule of the fascist regime in Italy. The city where the watchmaker has lived his entire life, now desolate and fearful, is the stage on which the story unfolds. The old man decides to build an automaton (a robot), to keep him company while he awaits the arrival of the fascist police who will deport the last of the remaining Jews from the ghetto.

In 2008, London painter Rachel Howard was invited by the youngest scion of Holland's van Loon family to create a body of work for the family museum. This volume features specially framed portraits and other work of a more architectural nature. The paint almost seems to drip from the paintings; brushstrokes are nearly invisible.

Amy Friend prefers imaginary worlds to reality. She wants to use photography as the medium bringing an opportunity to explore the relationship between the visible and the non-visible, sometimes even giving new life to images. Which is the case in this series, going by the name of Dare alla Luce, an Italian expression that literally means “giving to the light” but is a term used to describe the moment of birth.

Produced in conjunction with Bitter and Weber’s exhibition at Landesgalerie Landesmuseum, Linz, Autogestion, or Henri Lefebvre in New Belgrade presents a previously unpublished 1986 text by French philosopher and urbanist Henri Lefebvre. Printed as a facsimile of a recently discovered manuscript, Lefebvre’s text is based on the concept of “autogestion” (worker’s self-management), an idea central to urban restructuring processes. The text is contextualized and interpreted by accompanying commentaries and essays.

The American artist Andrea Bowers does not see art and politics as two fixed realities but as two realms that influence each other. Her broad interest in various forms of non-violent protest, civil disobedience and feminism is motivated by a historical awareness and archival curiosity regarding the history of political activism and its visual language or bodily expression. This interest is also decisive for her action within the art system and the very precise articulation of her art in both aesthetic and thematic terms. Bowers’ project for the Secession continues her investigation of the intersection between activism and art. The exhibition examines the people who maintain and display The AIDS Memorial Quilt and the storage facility they oversee that houses this cultural artifact.

Als Matrix des Lebens, der Natur und des Kosmos bildet Antje Majewskis Gimel-Welt gleichsam die Quintessenz eines Eigenen privaten Universalmuseums in einer Nussschale der Künstlerin und zeigt in den Hauptrollen ein Objektseptett: Einen Ton-Teekessel in Form einer menschlichen Hand, eine Muschel, ein aus Duftholz gefertigter Topf, eine Buddhahand-Zitrone, eine Milchorange, einen weißen Stein, einen Meteoriten – alle von Majewski während ihrer zahlreichen Reisen und Begegnungen erworben.

Eine umfassende Monografie über Amelie von Wulffen, mit eine Vielzahl neuer Bilder und Skulpturen. Sie beschäftigen sich vor allem mit emotionalen und auch psychoanalytischen Fragestellungen. Dabei interessiert die Künstlerin das Verhältnis von Unbewusstem und Bewusstem, das Mittragen von Traumata oder Schuld, wie auch versteckte Sehnsüchte, Fantasien und die Offenlegung von Scham.

Seit der 1986 von Adolf Krischanitz durchgeführten Generalsanierung der Secession bilden die vier zentralen Stützen des Hauptraums einen der prägendsten Elemente. Ursprünglich in poliertem Nickelstahl und Messing ausgeführt, blieben diese seit 1989 mehr als zweiundzwanzig Jahre lang verhüllt, respektive weiß überstrichen, wohl um deren eigensinnige Präsenz als vermeintliches Otto-Wagner-Zitat zu neutralisieren.

This book is an unconventional autobiography. It retraces one year in the life of Rob Pruitt through the quotidian objects that the artist once loved, consumed, then felt he didn't need anymore.

Die Monografie widmet sich zum ersten Mal umfassend dem Gesamtwerk des Künstlers und berücksichtigt dabei auch jüngere Arbeiten wie seine Serie Historic Photographs, die in einem direkten Bezug zur Biografie des Holocaust-Überlebenden Gustav Metzger stehen. Eine detaillierte Chronologie verortet die Aktivitäten des Künstlers im historischen und politischen Kontext ihrer Entstehung. Dadurch wird Metzger erstmals nicht nur als Künstler, sondern auch als Aktivist gewürdigt.

"Dossier sans suite" is the first part of a work in progress by Marisa Cornejo-Kasterine. It invites us to reflect critically on asylum and refugee status, while introducing us to the human and legal situation of people experiencing this condition. The artist opens a dialogue between stories of yesterday and today, inviting the viewer to approach this reality in both temporal spaces.

Heimo Zobernig’s contribution to the Venice Biennial responds directly to the existing exhibition situation in the Austrian Pavilion, built in 1934 based on plans by Josef Hoffmann and Robert Kramreiter. The Pavilion’s structure, with its rounded classical arches and majestic visual axes, on the one hand, and clear, rational forms and modern construction materials, on the other, moves between the poles of historicism and modernism. At the same time, Zobernig’s intervention connects inside and outside, to create an enclosed site where one can linger and reflect on human presence in space.
