Mit einem Vorwort von Marion Schärer und einem Text von Jean-Christophe Ammann.

Many works by Hans Schärer (1927–1997) can be seen in international museums and collections, but there is still a body of work, especially his works on paper, that has yet to be shown and appreciated. Schärer was always drawn to the complexities of the human psyche and the unpredictability of life.

He applied his inimitable sense of humour to cryptic, unsparing renditions of the colourful, hellish delights of paradise on earth, though not without a sympathetic understanding of human foibles and desires. In the early 1970s he began a series of watercolours with erotic motifs that became a self-contained body of work that explores the relationship between the sexes, and questions of power, myth and morals.

The book «Gespenster im Leib» (Spectres in the Belly) and the portfolio «Hund und Sühne» (Dog and Atonement, not available in bookshops) do justice to these pictures, revealing the artist to be an extraordinary watercolourist.
