philippen and son love their camera. The father may have a preference for landscapes and architecture, the son be fascinated with feminine beauty, but conceptual their work is not. Both are delightedly devoted to the framing eye of the camera. Their works keep each other in balance. They are different but also related in their dislike of great narratives, of critical stances, of drama, of emphatic rhetoric.

What matters is not what they#re looking alt, but how. And what is striking then is the way which both Sander and Rafael approach reality as if they saw it for the first time. They look at it, without any desire to understand, explain, or interpret reality. In this sense their photographs not only express their genuine wonder, but also their loose and free attitude towards their subject. This is what makes one of those black and white photographs by Sander of a flowerbed with (African) marigolds so endearing. This is how Rafael's girls keep their innocence.
