Plants and soil – The visual development of a structure is an artist’s book that contains a series of photographs edited from Hempel's collection of images of a representation of a peacock.

The peacock representation is a floral ornament that is meant to adorn a public garden in the centre of Hamburg. It is a relatively simple construction gardeners decorate anew each season – a flowerbed that had to take a form to flaunt the skill of its builders. On closer observation, this peacock representation may seem to be a rather ridiculous object. But things that appear insignificant or dull at first sight often turn out to be decisive and crucial elements in understanding the interweaving of the processes that constitute spaces, and the processes of perception in these spaces.
