Sailor
With the American artist Avery Singer, the Secession presents a young painter who integrates references to art history and contemporaneity into her work as well as the media conditions and mechanisms of the digital.
In her exhibition Sailor, which is also the artist's first solo show in Austria, Avery Singer is showing a series of new large-format paintings. While her older works often deal with stereotypes and ritualized behaviours of the art world, her most recent works are dominated by a clear tendency towards abstraction. They are dominated by projected surfaces, screens in the picture and shadows that take on a life of their own or lie like nets over the bodies and objects. This creates new pictorial spaces that are characterized by an irritating interaction between the illusionistic spatiality of the bodies depicted, the various pictorial planes and the flatness of the perfectly produced surface of the paintings.
