THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN the thinker and his thoughts has been the subject of numerous theoretical and literary inquiries, but the visual arts, more than any other domain, have raised the question of the form of thought.

Over the last five years the French artist Benoît Maire, who considers theory as his main medium, has built up a complex body of work that testifies to its own problematic relationship to the formalisation of a (constructed) theoretical discourse in art, while at the same time convincingly overcoming these problems through a great sensitivity to the shape of things, whether it be matter or thought.
