Ausgehend von einem Studium der Wandmalerei an der Kunstakademie in Sofia hat Nedko Solakov in den letzten 25 Jahren ein ebenso humorvolles wie verspieltes, ebenso bissiges wie melancholisches Oeuvre entwickelt, das die Gültigkeit jedweden Repräsentationssystems grundsätzlich in Frage stellt.

Seine Installationen, Skulpturen, Filme, Videos und Performances geben sich als Inszenierungen einer visuellen Kultur zu erkennen, in der er Kunst und naturwissenschaftliche Exponate in enge Verbindung setzt, den Blickwinkel eines Archäologen, Paläontologen, Zoologen oder Botanikers einnimmt.

This book contains a number of true and fictitious stories by writers, curators and artists about the city of Vilnius, that have been generated by the X Baltic Triennial of International Art Urban Stories staged at the Contemporary Art Centre (CAC) and diverse places and spaces throughout Vilnius in the autumn of 2009.

Initiated in 1994, the Curatorial Programme of de Appel arts centre aims to offer young curators a condensed package of experiences and skills that can be seen as instruments to enhance the development of their professional career.

The ten-month long Curatorial Programme exists in its current form since 2006, with a reshaped curriculum and an extended tutorial team. It encompasses a dense array of seminars, workshops, excursions (including a three-week research trip to a destination outside Western Europe), practice-related assignments and encounters with artists and art professionals.

The programme pays attention to the history of exhibition-making, diverse curatorial practices, institution building and project management. The programme is characterised by a specific focus on ´curating in the expanded field´, which is investigated through the polarity between ‘freelance ’ and ‘institutional’ curating and the notion ‘context-responsive’ curating.

In the photographs, installation, and book project that comprise Les Demoiselles de Bruxelles, the color images of African prostitutes seem at first to dominate the exhibition.

The publication series The Shadowfiles aims to make the undercurrent of (hidden) ideas and desires, thoughts and texts, which for de Appel functions like a permanent source of energy, accessible.

The Prix de Rome, which was instituted two hundred years ago by Louis Napoleon and accommodated in the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam in 1870, is the Dutch art und architecture award for artists under the age of 35. Its purpose is to trace talent ant to pinpoint trends in an international context.

Presented as the blueprints for three public lectures, We are behind proposes alternative routes through Emily Wardill’s work and represents three different attempts at embodying and dissembling knowledge.

In the essay he wrote for the On Mobility catalogue Van Weelden re-enacts 16th century rascal Tyl Uilenspiegel like an artist whose work he encountered during his travels to the exhibitions in Amsterdam, Berlin, Vilnius and Budapest. Van Weelden questions their balancing between artistic, individual freedom and social engagement. In his search for playful metaphors he is the fellow traveller of the reader and hands the essential luggage on this ongoing mental journey in a 21st century parable. The On Mobility catalogue contains images of the work of all 21 participating artists.

From 12 June through 16 August 1998, De Appel presented the work of the French artist Fabrice Hybert under the title Citoxe. This short brochure accompanied the exhibition.

'Encyclopedia of Fictional Artists (1605 – today)' is a publication by Koen Brams, who together with co-editors developed a compilation of biographies from fictional artists as presented in world literature. Although previously published and distributed as literature, this compilation provokes the perception of the art context as a descriptive and historical narrative and is therefore to be seen as a conceptual framework for potential artistic additions.
